// why HEIC, and a few caveats
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. Files are about half the size of equivalent JPGs but most non-Apple software (older Windows, Linux apps, web platforms, email clients) can't read them. Converting to JPG fixes compatibility everywhere at the cost of file size.
- First-load delay: the HEIC decoder is ~1.1MB of WebAssembly served from this site. It loads once per page and then conversions happen entirely locally.
- Multi-image HEIC files: some HEICs contain bursts or Live Photo frames. This tool extracts the primary image only.
- EXIF / metadata: location, capture date, and other metadata are NOT preserved in the JPG output. (Most users actually want this stripped for privacy.)
Privacy: the decoder is bundled with the site. Your photos never leave your device; they're decoded into a canvas and re-encoded as JPG entirely in your browser.
Related: for conversion among the common formats (JPG, PNG, WebP), use the general Image Converter.
