Metadata Viewer.

Drop in a PDF, a Word / Excel / PowerPoint file, or a photo to reveal the metadata hidden inside it: author, dates, the software that made it, page counts, camera and GPS data. The file never leaves your browser.

// what metadata is in my files?

Almost every file carries metadata, information about the file that isn't part of its visible content. It's useful (it's how your PDF reader shows a title, or your photo app sorts by date) but it can reveal more than you intend when you share a file.

  • PDF. Title, author, subject, keywords, the application and "producer" that generated it, creation and modification dates, PDF version, page count and page size, plus any XMP packet.
  • Word, Excel & PowerPoint. A .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx is a ZIP of XML; its docProps hold author, last-saved-by, company, manager, total editing time, revision number, and word / page / slide counts.
  • OpenDocument. LibreOffice / OpenOffice files (.odt, .ods, .odp) are also ZIPs; their meta.xml holds the original author and last editor, created and modified dates, total edit time, edit cycles, document statistics, and any custom properties.
  • Photos. JPEGs carry EXIF: camera make and model, lens, capture settings and date, and frequently the exact GPS coordinates (flagged in red below). PNGs can embed text fields like software and description.

How it works: PDFs are parsed with pdf.js; Office files are unzipped in memory with fflate and their property XML read directly; image EXIF and PNG chunks are parsed by hand. Use copy all as JSON to grab everything at once.

Privacy: every file is read straight from your device into memory and parsed locally. Nothing is uploaded.
